Published Writing

You can read my food and drink writing for the Houston Press and Houstonia magazine here:

I’ve had a couple of pieces published by the Houston Chronicle:

I’ve uploaded PDFs of a couple of other pieces I’ve written that may serve well as writing samples:

    • I wrote a paid article promoting Travel Alberta in the Houston Chronicle in 2015. You can find that PDF here.
    • In 2013, I wrote a profile on Rassul Zarinfar, founder of Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company, at a time when the brewery was still very early in its life but already had developed a reputation for unique and creative beers. That article is here.

I spent a couple of years as the Sports Editor and lead football writer of The Bayou Brief. You can find my articles here:

While it’s not really my writing, I was interviewed twice for CardPlayer magazine to break down hands I played in detail. Those are here:

I’ve done other professional writing as well for a number of companies for many years. If you’re looking to contact me for potential hiring purposes, you can find my resumé and contact information on several different career websites. (If you are here because you are considering me for a role, I must apologize that I do not have samples readily available from my work for Affordable Tours or TeeTurtle; however, I am happy to discuss those positions in more detail with you and what I did there, and perhaps you can get an idea of my writing abilities from reading some of these other selections.)

Personal writing

In sports, I was editor-in-chief and head writer of Zone Reads from roughly 2012 onward. While this largely stopped being a going concern in 2017 as I focused more on my sports work with the Bayou Brief, I still occasionally publish columns when something compels me to write about sports.

I wrote about arts and entertainment for another website under a pseudonym. (I value internet anonymity generally, but beyond that, given who my brother is and his stature in the film and television world, I didn’t want people reading my work solely because of him or to think any of my opinions reflected on him.) I’ve re-published some of my favorite work there on my blog page.

Screenplay Portfolio

I’ve been writing screenplays over the years in hopes of breaking into television writing. I’ve assembled a few of them here.

Spec:

I’ve got a spec script for the sitcom Parks and Recreation, titled “Heat Wave” (and the premise is pretty self-explanatory). Here’s the link.

Original:

Wacky Barack: I wrote this script in 2016 or so, an original pilot based around the premise that all the conservative conspiracy theories about Barack Obama were true, and one investigative journalist’s brave attempt to uncover the conspiracy. It’s satirical; as much as anything it lampoons the absurdly complicated network of people and moves it would take for those conspiracies to all be true. I don’t think you could really make it into a series; this functions more as a proof-of-concept that I can write a sitcom script. That script is here.

Madison Square: This is the series I’d really like to make. I’ve written the first two episodes so far. The premise is about the inner workings of a pro basketball team in Manhattan. (The script uses the Knicks, but if it gets made we’d have to secure NBA rights for that.) The series kicks off with the impulsive, alcoholic owner hiring an analytically-minded general manager with no previous experience, and the conflicts as he tries to do his job while negotiating with and managing the other egos in the front office. Those links are below.

Poker Writing

Now that I’ve returned to playing poker, I’m writing about my journey on my Patreon. I may have some other links to other work as well; I’ve written a lot of pieces over the years on various websites and under various names.

During my run as a poker player during the boom years, I maintained several blogs about my experiences and my time at the tables. Those blogs represent different snapshots in time; they’re linked below:
